Day of the girl
Every year, 11th October is recognized as a day to bring together organizations that serve girls to further the advancement of their human rights. This resonates with our mission as Girl EmEd which is to make a positive and lasting impact in the lives of girls using education as a tool for empowerment.
In this era, there is increased recognition and support for safety and educational opportunities for girls. Our voices count and we have more opportunities than ever. Growing up, education for girls was encouraged and quotas were given in some circumstances which helped to bridge the gap. Although we are not yet where we need to be, there are more girls accessing education than the previous generations. The question to ask ourselves now is do girls have a seat at the table; professionally and socially. I long for a world where a female president or CEO will not make news because she is female but due to the recognition of her work. Despite the progress made, there are still challenges unique to girls from a young age and throughout life such as education discrimination, gender based pay inequalities, inadvertent job discrimination and the pressure to be ‘everything.
On this ‘Day of the Girl’, we celebrate the milestones achieved, continue to press and invite you to support us to achieve a more equitable society.
